An urgent notice from the Hong Kong Rabbit Society

An urgent notice from the Hong Kong Rabbit Society
Emergency receiving service will be suspended from 2 October
Operational reserve at a record-low level, barely enough to support three months of operations
The Hong Kong Rabbit Society (HKRS) is making an announcement on our critical financial situation after taking up a medical of expenses of over HKD800,000 in 2024 so far, including masstive medical expenses for the six rabbits received under critical condition and the various medical procedures or surgery required for the rabbits we are caring for, not to mention the massive operational expenses to care for 100 rabbits in our centre, we have exhausted every cents of our September reserve. Although our committee member have already injected a 6 figure emergency funding into the HKRS reserve fund, unfortunately, this would only be enough to cover our operation for another three months.
It is a difficult call to suspend our emergency receiving service, as we know this is the last resort for many of the owner who are no longer able to care for their rabbit in the case of an injury of illness. However, we have to be responsible for the 100 rabbit under our care, in the coming three months, we will do our very best to save up enough reserve fund to sustain our operation. If we fail to reverse the financial distress we are facing, we may have no choice but to cease our operation.
Since our establishment in 2003 as Hong Kong’s first animal welfare organisation specialise in rabbits, we have been committed to helping every single rabbit that come into our care, regardless of their age and health condition, we have always strive to provide the medical care they need and deserve. We only have two full time employees and a number of part-time employees, our president and committee members all work on a pro-bono status, we have been putting every effort into saving unnecessary cost except for medical expenses and day to day care for our rabbits.
Among the 100 rabbits that we are currently caring for, more than half of them are adult, with many of them having different condition such as cancer, dental problem or ear condition, requiring regular medical procedures or surgery. It is not difficult to imagine that not a lot of adopters would be interested in adults rabbits or those with chronic illnesses, which makes up a large mojority of the rabbits currently living in our centre, adding more challenge to this situation was the ever growing number of surrender cases and the economic outlook which impacted the donation that we have been receiving in the past few years. All of these contributed to our critical financial status, leading us to this difficult decision of suspending our emergency receiving service.
For the last 21 years, we have witnessed a huge improvement in welfare for rabbits in Hong Kong, due to the hard work of the HKRS in educating the general public on knowledge about rabbit, we also provided free courses to susccessful adoptors to make sure they understand how to properly care for a rabbit, in order to reduce the chance of a rabbit being maltreated or abandoned again. We ask for your genority in supporting us to continue our mission in helping more rabbits in need.
You may support us in the following ways, and we also welcome any suggestions which may help us through this very challenging phase of the HKRS.
1. Purchase daily necessities and products for your pets through our shop, every cents of profits from our shop will be used on medical expenses and daily expenses for the 100 rabbits that we are caring for. You may visit our centre or our online shop: https://store.hkrabbit.org/
2. Make monthly donation via paypal to support many of our rabbits on their medical expenses. For monthly donation of HKD100 or more, you can receive an annual donation receipt in April-May for tax reduction.
3. Make one-time donation to help rabbits in need. For every donation over HKD100, you will also receive a donation receipt for tax reduction.
