Is not their fault to get sick….why they have to face such fate….
February 19 at 2 pm we found that there were two women left a rabbit at our Centre’s stairs, when the rabbit (known as Ah A) was brought back to the Centre for examination, the moment was really shocking and sad . A burst of bad odor from Ah A’s body was scattered all over the Centre. We looked again at Ah A’s body, we were shocked. A weird object sized almost half of Ah A’s body was bulging on its belly and there was rotten feces. We initially thought the bad odor was came from the rotten feces. Our staff and volunteers helped it clean its body. Ah A licked their hands in return. During the cleaning, we found that its belly’s skin was inflamed and has a blood hole. Our staff immediately notified our committee volunteers and ask for immediate treatment from the Kowloon Veterinary Hospital.

Confirmed by veterinarian Dr. Colt Ma, the weird object on Ah A’s body is a long time breast cancer. It was as big as two adult fists. The blood hole is due to Ah A’s tumor was too large and caused skin friction when it was walking. Ah A need to schedule to undergo surgery immediately. However, although Ah A’s weight was 2.7kg, the tumor was accounted for the majority of the weight thus surgery was risky. The veterinarian explained the biggest problem was when removing the tumor, the nearby tissue and skin have to cut out in order to prevent cancer recurrence. But its tumor was too big and they afraid there was not enough skin to sewn the wound after tumor removal. The only way was to try to keep most of the skin tissue, and combine drug treatment after surgery. Ah A was intravenous drip at the hospital for one night and wait for operation on Sunday.

We received Dr. Colt call on Sunday morning and he said before the operation he took x-ray for Ah A and found that the cancer had spread to the lungs and it was the final stage of cancer. He proposed to bring Ah A to the rainbow bridge without much pain. Goodbye Ah A.
The two women came Monday to the Centre in person and stated that they were willing to respond for the Ah A’s medical expenses but everything was too late. According to the information they provided, Ah A was 7 years old and was found to have breast cancer half a year ago. Because they did not get Ah A to cure and until recently the family dislike its bad odor thus they abandoned it.
Our surveillance camera had recorded the whole process of the two women abandoning the rabbit (it will be uploaded later to our website, facebook and blogs), it is illegal where all the animals sick but not getting appropriate treatment from their owners and result in abandonment. An offense is liable to a fine of $ 10,000 and imprisonment for 6 months. We already reported to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department and provided them with related evidence.
